Man tackles customer, vandalizes legendary Bay Area bakery in viral video

The owners of San Jose’s storied Peters’ Bakery are asking the public to help identify a man who they said caused $2,000 worth of damage and tackled a customer at the nearly 90-year-old pastry shop earlier this month.

Peters’ Bakery posted a video to social media that showed surveillance footage of a man at the popular Alum Rock Avenue bakery on Dec. 17. According to the video’s narrator, he was attempting to sell cleaning wipes, but “after our staff politely asked for his contact information, he became belligerent.” In the video, he is seen shoving equipment and store goods off the counter before exiting. Outside the shop, the video shows a customer following the man, seemingly recording him on her phone. The man then tackles the customer to the ground and smashes her phone on the concrete. The viral video has garnered nearly 700,000 views on Instagram.

“We are heartbroken for our customer and our team,” the video’s narrator said. “Violence against small businesses has to stop.”…
