Military flare found at S.F. beach is safely detonated, authorities say

A bomb squad safely detonated a military marine flare that apparently washed up at Ocean Beach in San Francisco on Sunday, authorities said.

A beachgoer called 911 and reported the flare, described as a metal tube with military markings and initially believed to be an unexploded ordnance, U.S. Park Police said. The call came in around 2 p.m. near Vicente Street, just north of the San Francisco Zoo.

“After investigation, it was determined that the device is a military marine flare and needs to be detonated in place,” U.S. Park Police said…
