Dozens of bags of drugs found inside Santa Clara County jails

(KRON) — Santa Clara County Sheriff’s Deputies have seized dozens of bags of drugs found inside Santa Clara County jails this month.

At the Elmwood Correctional Complex, K9 deputies helped authorities find nearly 400 grams of methamphetamine, synthetic marijuana, tobacco, and other contraband worth more than $16,000, the sheriff’s office said. Assistant Sheriff Michelle Asban said that the bust prevented the drugs from reaching inmates.

“These incidents directly impact the safety of our facilities and the well-being of our staff and those incarcerated,” Asban said. “This was solid work by the deputies involved and our K9 Unit. Their attentiveness and follow-through prevented a large amount of contraband from reaching the incarcerated population.”

Drugs were also found in two cells at the Santa Clara County Main Jail this month.

“Deputies found handmade cigarettes, a bag of white powder, and bindles of a brownish-orange substance believed to be THC,” the Santa Clara County Sheriff’s Office said. “A body scan revealed additional contraband hidden on one individual, including dozens of baggies of white powder, THC concentrate, and other unknown drugs.”

In total, authorities have seized drugs and drug-related contraband on six separate occasions inside Santa Clara County jails in January.
