‘That love never dies’: 2 sentenced in 2022 killing of divinity student on Telegraph Avenue

Two East Bay men are heading to prison for killing 29-year-old divinity student Isamaeli “Eli” Mata’afa when they fired into a group of friends after a fistfight on Telegraph Avenue one weekend night in 2022.

Judge Rozlynn Silvaggio sentenced Michael Edward Monrroy-Ramos of Union City to eight years in prison, and Andy Geovanny Gutierrez-Rebollo of Oakland to 14 years, for their roles in the October 2022 shooting that left Mata’afa dead and his three companions wounded.

While one of the men, Gutierrez-Rebollo, has accepted some responsibility for Mata’afa’s death, investigators never determined who fired the fatal shot or shots…
