Police reviewing license plate reader practices

The Santa Clara Police Department is reviewing its Automated License Plate Reader (ALPR) program after concerns were raised at a recent City Council meeting. A community member questioned data sharing with the United States Postal Inspection Service and out-of-state agencies, and asked the department to pause ALPR use.

The department stated it will conduct an internal review with city technology staff to confirm that ALPR settings and data sharing follow California law and department policy.
