Number of Block layoffs in Bay Area remains a mystery

Block Inc. announced more than a month ago that it was laying off 4,000 employees — but good luck finding out just how many of those are Bay Area residents.

Companies in California generally notify the state Employment Development Department about mass layoffs, informing the agency about the number of employees they’re letting go, the cities in which those workers are based and the workers’ titles.

EDD, in turn, usually makes those layoff notices available within a few days of receiving them, alerting the public to new notices by adding them to a spreadsheet it updates regularly…
