SFO halts flights amid thunderstorms, delays stretch across airport

Ground traffic of aircraft at the Bay Area’s largest airport was stopped Saturday evening as a band of thunderstorms slashed through the region.

At 5:19 p.m., San Francisco International Airport officials issued a ground stop due to the rain and wind from inclement weather. The halt of operations was expected to last until about 6:45 p.m., said airport duty manager Russell Mackey.

That led to average delays of almost an hour for arrivals and departures, with warnings that those numbers are likely to lengthen, according to FlightAware.com. Once the ground stop gets lifted, Mackey estimated delays would increase to up to 160 minutes long…
