Family of fallen Selma officer Carrasco reacts to new monument in his honor

SELMA, Calif. ( KSEE/KGPE ) – Nearly a year after his death, a new monument now sits proudly outside the Selma Police Department, honoring and forever documenting the sacrifice Officer Gonzalo Carrasco Jr. made for the department and the City of Selma.

“I hear officers who pass away and we still talk about them, we still think of them, we still honor them. So for my brother to be one of them, it’s special,” his sister Paola Carrasco said.

She told our news team when she first heard about the monument, she felt proud.

“He protected us, he fought for us, he kept everybody safe,” she added.

On the plaque, a quote from John F. Kennedy reads, “A man may die, nations may rise and fall, but an idea lives on.”

The monument honoring Carrasco and ensuring his memory lives on.

His sister Alma Ordaz said when she first found out they were putting a monument in, she was emotional. But she does like that they will have another spot to go and remember her brother’s life.

“It was a proud moment, he gave everything, you know it was, it was nice to see people still supporting us and being there and remembering him,” she said.
