FRESNO, Calif. ( KGPE/KSEE ) – Thousands of people packed San Francisco on Jan 28. for a referendum vote, in an effort to make Punjab its own nation, called Khalistan.
The movement brought thousands of people from the Central Valley to make the trek together to San Francisco early Sunday morning.
“The Sikh community has contributed a lot to the history of the United States. Building the railroads. A lot of our history is actually missing from our history books, but I believe it is being written today,” said Community Organizer Gurdeep Shergill.
According to the San Francisco Standard, California has roughly a quarter of a million Sikhs.
The vote in San Francisco follows votes in London, Geneva, Rome, Toronto, and Vancouver – in the hope of taking the ballots to the United Nations in 2025.
