FRESNO, Calif. ( KSEE/KGPE ) – After a failed attempt to take down the “G” sign that sat atop the State Center Community College District office in Downtown Fresno two weeks ago, crews were finally able to take it down Saturday morning.
During the first attempt, crews deemed the removal unsafe. The sign was initially estimated to weigh somewhere between 4,500 to 6,500 pounds. As the morning went on, it was discovered that the sign weighed over 11,000 pounds and the project had to be postponed .
On Saturday, another crowd gathered Downtown to watch as the iconic sign eventually came down. The sign, installed in 1965, was on the roof of the former Guarantee Savings and Loan and is located on Fresno Street, between Congo Alley and Fulton Street. The building is now home to the State Center Community College District.
The sign will be replaced with a new replica – and the old sign will get taken to the Fresno Fairgrounds where it will be on display with the rest of the historic Fresno signs.
