IDENTIFIED: Reedley College student who died after drinking ‘large amounts of alcohol’

FRESNO, Calif. ( KSEE/KGPE ) – The Reedley College student who died following a social gathering inside a campus dorm room over the weekend has been identified by the Fresno County Coroner’s Office.

Officials say 18-year-old Derek Burton passed away Saturday morning .

According to the Fresno County Sheriff’s Office, officers with the State Center Community College District’s police department responded to a dorm room at the Reedley Community College campus to check on Derek Burton. He was taken to the hospital where he passed away.

Derek Burton, who was originally from Sherwood in Oregon, had dreams of joining the Reedley College football team as an offensive lineman next season, according to the Fresno County Sheriff’s Office. His former team, the Newberg Tigers, posted their memorial to Derek on social media .

Investigators say Derek Burton had been drinking “large amounts of alcohol” throughout the night in a dorm room with some of his friends. After Burton became non-responsive, those friends called for help. No evidence of foul play was found.
