US first-ever electric aviation program takes off in Reedley

FRESNO COUNTY, Calif. ( KSEE/KGPE ) – The United States’ first ever FAA-Certified electric aircraft training program is set to take off in Reedley.

Named the Sustainable Aviation Project, city officials say this initiative is a one-of-a-kind flight training program and the plane that will be used, a Pipistrel Alpha Electro, is the only FAA-certified all-electric aircraft in the nation that can be used for flight training.

“By integrating cutting-edge technology into this type of training program, we are setting a precedent for the nation when it comes to future aviation training, and for providing a scalable model that enhances our local economy, protects our environment, and creates more opportunity for all,” said Supervisor Buddy Mendes, Chair, Fresno County Transportation Authority.

This initiative will also create new opportunities for disadvantaged students within Fresno County as electric aircraft dramatically reduces the costs of flight training, making an aviation career more attainable.
