Officers say the victims had barricaded themselves inside a back room of the home while they waited for police. The suspect left the home in response to officers’ commands and came outside while still carrying the two knives. When the officers went inside, they discovered a smoke alarm going off and a smoldering section of carpet – along with a strong smell of gas.

Investigators say the suspect had turned on the gas from the stove and intentionally started a fire. The gas was quickly shut off after the smell was discovered.
