2 baby pups welcomed at the Fresno Chaffee Zoo

FRESNO, Calif. ( KSEE/KGPE ) – Two new meerkat pups are now out and about at the Fresno Chaffee Zoo, according to zoo staff.

The zoo says the duo of meerkat pups popped out of their underground den for the first time this Friday. Smithsonian’s National Zoo and Conservation Biology Institute says meerkat pups typically stay in their burrow for about three weeks before exploring the above-ground world.

Although the pups will not reach full maturity until roughly one year of age, the young meerkats will begin to look like adults by two months old, according to Smithsonian’s National Zoo .

The pups, along with the adult meerkats, Amelia, Izzy, and Jasper, can be found in the Chaffee Zoo’s African Adventure across from the lion habitat.
