Fresno, Madera to receive over $25M to combat homelessness

FRESNO, Calif. ( KSEE/KGPE ) – Governor Gavin Newsom is continuing his fight against homelessness. Tuesday, he announced a new round of statewide grants, and the Fresno and Madera regions are getting more than $25 million to combat homelessness.

“It’s not going to fix our homeless issue overnight, but we are optimistic that we’re going to be able to put that money to good use,” Fresno City Councilmember Tyler Maxwell said.

Maxwell admits he was surprised after Newsom announced $827.5 million in grants to combat homelessness statewide.

“We’ve been hopeful that we’d receive more money to assist homeless folks here in our community. But the $25 million between us and Madera County was huge. I was certainly not expecting that much money,” Maxwell said.

37 grantees across California will receive funds through the HHAP program. Newsom even praised Fresno Mayor Jerry Dyer for his efforts to house the unhoused.

“Our state of mind is to invest in solutions and programs in the most rural parts of the state, the northernmost parts, southern, most parts, inland parts of California. In fact, we’re seeing some of the biggest progress in some of those communities working very closely. As an example with Mayor Dyer in Fresno has done an outstanding job,” Newsom said.
