California Air Resources Board’s new fuel standards to increase gas prices

FRESNO, Calif. ( KSEE/KGPE ) – The California Air Resources Board (CARB) updated its Low Carbon Fuel Standard (LCFS) on Friday, potentially increasing gas prices.

LCFS is a state program aimed at reducing carbon dioxide emissions that come from transportation fuels.

“Increase in gas is going to make things a lot harder for individuals. You know, it’s already a struggle to purchase groceries that are going skyrocket. It’s already hard for, you know, rent and just, you know, everything nowadays,” Cameron Grant, a Fresno resident said.

The updates to LCFS aim to cut transportation emissions by 30%.

“To be honest, my initial reaction is disgust,” Scott Cain, President of West Hills Oil said.

CARB did not provide an estimate of how much this would impact the cost of gas.

“There’s no estimate of what this will add to the price of a gallon of gas. And but, you know, it’s going to go up,” Cain said.

Cain said the goal of transitioning to electric vehicles is not something California is ready for.
