‘She’s a human being’: Family after woman killed in hit-and-run in Fresno

FRESNO, Calif. ( KSEE/KGPE ) – The unhoused woman who was killed in a hit-and-run on Saturday night in Southeast Fresno has been named, and her family is coming forward.

Wendy Lee Coffman, 60, was crossing Clovis Avenue in a wheelchair when she was struck by a white pickup truck.

Her daughters say their mother suffered from mental health issues, and they hadn’t heard from her for many years so they were unaware that she was homeless or in a wheelchair.

“We’ve always been receptive whenever she’s reached out, but it’s kind of been an issue of we don’t know, we never know where she is, and it had probably been close to seven or eight years last time we really spoke with her,” said Brittany Harris, one of Coffman’s daughters.

Saturday around 5:30 p.m., a driver called 911 reporting a pedestrian v. vehicle hit and run on Clovis Avenue near Inyo Street.

The caller said a white pickup truck was seen driving northbound fleeing the scene, leaving Coffman in the middle of the busy road.
