PLAYA DEL REY – A boat has beached on the sand 100 yards south of Culver Boulevard, raising environmental concerns among local advocates. The vessel, stranded on November 15, became the focus of recovery efforts when lifeguards attempted to tow it back to sea on November 16, but those efforts failed.
Officials are now working with Los Angeles County Beaches and Harbors to move the wreck to dry sand to prevent it from breaking apart and causing further damage.
“This needs immediate attention before it turns into an environmental disaster,” said a representative from Friends of the Jungle, a Playa del Rey-based environmental group. The organization warned that similar incidents, like the May 16 shipwreck in the same area, highlight the urgency of quick cleanup efforts to avoid harm to marine and coastal ecosystems.
Photos taken on the morning of November 17 show the ship resting on wet sand, vulnerable to high tides. Friends of the Jungle emphasized that delays in cleanup could lead to debris and pollutants entering the ocean, impacting wildlife and water quality.
