Clovis police: 1 dead, 4 hurt; teen driver suspected of DUI

CLOVIS, Calif. ( KSEE/KGPE )- A woman was killed, several others were hospitalized, and a teenager was arrested following an extensive crash early Sunday morning, Clovis police said.

Officers were dispatched to the intersection of Fowler and Gettysburg Avenues after receiving multiple calls about a crash in the area around 2 a.m.

They say they arrived to find five vehicles involved, some directly, and some indirectly.

Investigators say the driver of a Hyundai car was traveling westbound on Gettysburg Avenue, approaching Fowler Avenue, at a high rate of speed as another Hyundai was traveling southbound on Fowler Avenue, approaching Gettysburg Avenue.

Police believe the driver of the westbound car was under the influence of alcohol and ran his red light, smashing into the other Hyundai, who had a green light.

The impact of the collision forced the two cars involved to spin out and hit three parked vehicles in the driveways of two nearby homes.

Officers say the driver at fault and two of his passengers, as well as the two occupants in the victim’s car, were all transported to an area hospital. An adult female passenger in the victim’s car succumbed to her injuries and died, while that vehicle’s driver remains in critical condition.
