Fresno man shot by parole officer was unarmed, lawyer says

FRESNO, Calif. ( KSEE/KGPE ) – A Fresno lawyer says there is much we don’t know about 26-year-old Jeremy Sanchez’s death after he was fatally shot by a parole officer on Christmas Eve.

According to police, the shooting took place at around 12:30 p.m. on the 300 block on West Cortland Avenue. Officials say during the parole officer’s visit, a physical altercation took place and the parole officer opened fire on the parolee.

Officials say despite the agent’s efforts to perform life-saving measures, Sanchez died at the scene. The parole officer sustained minor injuries.

Fresno-based lawyer Stuart Chandler says the initial reports don’t have all the facts. Chandler says police neglected to mention that Sanchez was unarmed, making further review of the incident of the utmost importance.

Under the law, deadly force can only be used to defend against an imminent threat of death or serious bodily injury to the officer or another person. We will know more when an autopsy report is available; I believe it will confirm at least one gunshot wound was to the back of the head or neck confirming that he was moving away from and not threatening the officer.
