Clovis Community College Farmers Market combats food insecurity with free produce

August 23, 2025 — Clovis Community College (CCC) is making fresh, healthy food more accessible to students and the wider community with its on-campus Farmers Market. The market, which offers free produce to attendees, is a key part of the college’s ongoing effort to address students’ basic needs, specifically food insecurity.

Bonita Gomez, the director of basic needs and retention services at Clovis, describes the Farmers Market as an extension of the college’s basic needs program. “It’s just another way of helping support students who are experiencing food insecurity,” she said. The initiative complements other resources like the on-campus Crush Pantry and CalFresh screening services, creating a pathway for students to get the support they need.

The produce, which has included items like mini watermelons, spaghetti squash, and various peppers, is donated by the Central California Food Bank. Gomez noted that the event, which has been running for years, has seen an excellent response from the student body.
