Hot and hazy this holiday weekend

The Labor Day weekend is here! The unofficial last weekend of summer is just about always hot for us, but this weekend we’ll also be dealing with extra haze/smoke in the air from the Garnet Fire.

Temperatures weren’t too bad as we finished off the week, but Mother Nature will kick those high temperatures up to around 100 for all 3 days this weekend. That will be around 5 above average for this time of year.

The extra smoke and haze in the air the past couple of days is from the Garnet Fire, which is burning in the Sierra Nevada of eastern Fresno County. When the air cools at night, it gets heavy and wants to sink. That pulls the smoke plume from the fire down to the ground. That cooler smoke plume wants to continue to sink, so it flows down Kings Canyon, and disperses into the Valley below Pine Flat Lake. Air quality near the Sierra foothills of Mariposa, Madera, Fresno, and Tulare counties could approach Unhealthy levels early in the morning this weekend, but will improve some in the afternoon when warm air forces the smoke to rise…
