Lawsuit over restart of Central California offshore drilling is allowed to proceed

LOS ANGELES (CN) — A federal judge on Wednesday denied a bid by an offshore oil drilling company to dismiss the lawsuit by the Center for Biological Diversity that challenged the decision by the U.S. Bureau of Ocean Energy Management to allow the aging oil platforms of the Central Californian coast to resume production.

U.S. District Judge Michelle Williams’ court rejected Sable Offshore Corp.’s claim that two groups, an environmental nonprofit and the Wishtoyo Foundation, a Native American organization, failed to provide adequate notice of their intent to sue.

The oil company argued the bureau decided only in April not to require updated drilling plans for Santa Barbara Channel platforms, while the groups had sent their notice the previous September over the bureau’s earlier inaction…
