CHP blames fish oil spill that caused crashes and spinouts on ‘improper securement and sudden braking’

California troopers are asking truckers to secure their loads following a “fishy situation” in the Fresno area.

On October 10, 2025, the California Highway Patrol’s FresnoDivisionbegan receiving reports about slick road conditions causing multiple crashes and spinouts along a five mile stretch of southbound SR-99 through Fresno.

“After following the fishy trail, officers located the source: a truck hauling 40,000 gallons of fish oil! Due to improper securement and sudden braking, the liquid load shifted and began leaking onto the freeway,” CHP said.

No injuries were reported.

A Hazmat team was brought in to verify that the spill was not hazardous, and then a Caltrans crew helped to clear the fish oil from the roadway so that it could be reopened…
