State officials responsible for safeguarding workers’ rights have raised concerns that a recent mass layoff incident may have violated federal law, potentially leading to future fines and legal repercussions. The incident in question involves Soul Housing, an LA-based recuperative care facility operator, which abruptly laid off employees at their facility on Blackstone Avenue in Fresno. The company claimed that the sudden nature of the layoffs was in compliance with federal workers’ protections. However, the Worker Adjustment and Retraining Act (WARN), a federal law, typically requires employers to provide at least 60 days’ advance notice before initiating layoffs. In contrast, Soul Housing gave their employees about 12 hours’ advance notice.
