Hazmat called to fire at a Fresno warehouse

FRESNO, Calif. (KSEE/KGPE) – Hazmat was called to a Fresno warehouse after a fire broke out Thursday afternoon.

Fresno Fire received the call around 2:30 p.m.; at the time, they were told that the property housed chromium, a carcinogen that has been known to spontaneously explode when exposed to fire.

By the time crews arrived at Betts Manufacturing, flames were spreading throughout the facility’s exhaust ducting. After investigation, they found that a piece of industrial machinery had caught fire.

Due to the company’s use of various hazardous materials in production, hazmat was requested. Fortunately, the chromium was not involved as originally suspected, and firefighters were able to contain the fire to the machinery and affected ducting, preventing significant structural damage to the facility…
