BELLOWS FALLS, Vt. – The First Baptist Church of Bellows Falls has been honored with the prestigious Widow’s Mite Award by the American Baptist Churches U.S.A. Presented by the Ministers and Missionaries Benefit Board (MMBB), this award recognizes churches for exceptional generosity, measured not by the size of the congregation, but by the percentage of their budget dedicated to mission and ministry, and the consistency of that giving year after year.
The Widow’s Mite Award is rooted in the Gospel story from Luke 21:1-4, in which a widow offers “two very small copper coins,” giving all that she had. The award also commemorates an inspiring act of sacrificial generosity in 1981, when a Vietnamese woman worshipping with the First Chinese Baptist Church of Fresno, Calif., unaware of the purpose of the offering, placed her wristwatch, her only possession of value, into the offering envelope. Presented annually, the award includes national recognition by ABCUSA, and the presentation of an engraved engrossment to the recipient church.
This honor is especially significant for the First Baptist Church of Bellows Falls, a small congregation that consistently gives more than 30%of its annual budget to serve others both locally and abroad. Through monthly mission offerings, support of American Baptist Churches ministries, and partnerships with local and foreign missions, the church demonstrates a vibrant commitment to living out its faith through generosity…
