Measure C chaos prompts Selma to consider its own tax

SELMA – In the shadow of the tumultuous renewal process for Measure C, Fresno County’s transportation sales tax, the city of Selma floated the idea of establishing its own sales tax to make up for possible lost revenue.

Presented at the Feb. 3 meeting by City Manager Jason Rogers, the Selma City Council considered its options for putting a city tax on the ballot in the November election. Kendall Flint, a regional director with consulting firm DKS Associates, said the council had many avenues it could move forward with, but council members ultimately voted 5-0 to not pursue a Selma-specific tax measure at this time.

“I think at this stage, I think this is very important to stay in touch with DKS to keep monitoring the progress of this, and … keep this under advisement and let’s see what happens with the general election,” Selma Mayor Scott Robertson said. “And then, based on those results, we come back with what we need to do after that.”

The city of Selma may need to consider its own tax measure because of the possibility that Measure C, and the millions of dollars in tax revenue that Fresno County has generated with it, will go away in April 2027…
