‘Never thought my dad would die’: Jerry Dyer on his father’s legacy

FRESNO, Calif. (KGPE) – Fresno Mayor Jerry Dyer remembers his father as a tough, driven public servant whose life story was defined by sacrifice, resilience, and a deep commitment to others.

Don Dyer died last month at the age of 87.

“I know my dad was proud of me. I know my dad loved me even though I never heard him say it,” the mayor said. “I knew he loved me by the way he interacted with me and the fact that he was always there for me.”

Don Dyer’s life began with hardship. His father died when he was just 5 years old, forcing him to grow up quickly. He dropped out of high school to support himself, working in construction before becoming a truck driver.
