FRESNO, Calif. (KSEE/KGPE) – Want to teach your children how to become better swimmers? The City of Fresno Parks and Recreation Department is offering free lessons just in time for summer.
The lessons are open to all skill levels, with seven levels based on the swimmer’s skill set:
Level 1: Stafish
- No experience needed
- Designed for those who are afraid of getting in the water
- Swim instructor guides both guardian and child through lessons
Level 2: Tadpole
- Little to no experience
- Exposure to basic swimming skills like breath control, paddling, kicking, and floating
- Learn to open eyes underwater and how to swim to the surface
Level 3: Goldfish
- Introduces buoyancy, body position, propulsion, and coordinated strokes
- Teaches the foundations of swimming, like how to approach turns and beginner strokes
Level 4: Shark
- Increases swimmers’ endurance and water safety skills
- Introduces additional coordinated strokes and breathing techniques
- Students should be able to front crawl/freestyle for one lap (25 yds) to begin Shark level
Level 5: Dolphin
- Coordination and endurance building
- Must be proficient in swimming front stroke/back stroke, floating, breathing, and streamline, and must be able to swim 50 yards (two laps)
- Will learn breaststroke and butterfly
- Goggles are strongly recommended
Level 6: Orca
- Strengthening technique, control, and endurance
- Structured practices and detailed instruction
- Readiness to prepare for competitive swimming
