Three McKinney organizations are getting a financial boost for projects ranging from a larger donation farm to an expanded medical clinic and a new science exhibit. The McKinney Community Development Corporation approved more than $1.14 million in project grants for McKinney Roots, CommonGood Medical and the Heard Natural Science Museum and Wildlife Sanctuary during its Aug. 27 board meeting.
Together, the projects will support food access, healthcare and educational opportunities across McKinney.
McKinney Roots Prepares For A Major Expansion
The largest of the three grants, $764,953, will support the relocation and expansion of McKinney Roots to Gray Branch Park. The funding will help pay for infrastructure associated with the move, including underground utilities, dirt work, irrigation, sanitary infrastructure and driveway and parking improvements.
The new location will also give the donation farm more room to grow. According to city documents, plans include doubling hydroponic production, adding a 200-tree orchard, doubling the chicken flock and increasing produce production, educational opportunities and community programming…
