The current drought in North Texas ranks as the fifth-worst in our history at 57 days since the last measurable rainfall. While we’re doing stats, D-FW just set a record for the most 100-degree days in the month of September, a record no one was interested in setting. Needless to say, it’s really dry and hot, so you may be wondering why this week’s column is about storm damage. Well, this heat too shall pass, and fall storms will be on the horizon before long.

How Big Was That Hail?
Does anybody remember bowling ball-size hail in Wylie? I did a little Googling, and there has definitely been softball-sized hail recorded in the town. Bowling ball-sized, or approximately eight inches in diameter, is actually the current world record. It was recorded in Vivian, South Dakota, in 2010. Regardless, Clayton is talking about a particularly awful storm in which huge hail not only damaged a roof, but was able to come through the decking and drywall and into the kitchen.
