Allen Animal Services has reported a significant distemper outbreak in Allen, more severe than previous instances. The viral disease is affecting the local raccoon population in Collin County, which could pose a risk to pets. Pet owners are advised to vaccinate their pets against the disease.

To address the outbreak, Allen Animal Services will host a low-cost vaccination clinic on Saturday, March 9 from 10 a.m. to noon. The clinic will accept walk-ins for dogs on leashes and cats in hard-sided carriers. After vaccination, pet owners can register their pets with the city at the shelter.

Over the past six weeks, about 41 raccoons have been found ill or deceased due to the virus, says Senior Animal Services Officer Chow-Hayes. Distemper in raccoons can cause fever, vomiting, and seizures. Some infected raccoons may appear calm and unusually friendly.

Raccoons can carry both the canine and feline strains of distemper, posing a risk to dogs and cats. Vaccination is the most effective way to protect pets from the disease. Pet owners should act promptly if they encounter a raccoon or other wild animal that seems ill or injured.
