The Texas Army National Guard recently held a Mission Day at Wylie East High School. The event used virtual reality (VR) to simulate rescue missions, teaching students about teamwork and communication in disaster scenarios. Students from AFJROTC and Law Enforcement classes participated in four VR experiences: Field Hospital, Night Vision Rescue, HAZMAT Cleanup, and Virtual Firefighter.

The main goal was to teach students effective communication and teamwork in high-pressure situations. They also learned about the military’s benefits. The VR technology let students perform CPR on virtual soldiers, navigate dark tunnels with night vision headgear, clear debris in hazmat suits, and fight virtual fires.

Sophomore Isabella Troncoso was impressed by the realism of the VR experience, especially during the CPR simulation. She felt as if she was performing CPR on a real person. The VR goggles gave a full-body view of the virtual soldiers, making the experience more immersive.

Another sophomore, Dara Oshinowo, enjoyed the CPR and wildfire stations. He said he learned many skills that he wants to develop further. Oshinowo plans to join the Air Force and earn a medical degree. The event gave him a glimpse of his potential future career.
