The Chase Begins
The incident unfolded when a Sumter County Sheriff’s Office deputy, patrolling I-95, noticed a pickup truck speeding northbound. Radar readings showed the vehicle traveling at an alarming 94 MPH. The deputy activated the patrol vehicle’s lights and siren, initiating a pursuit.
Reed, driving the stolen truck, recklessly swerved through traffic, even using the road’s shoulder to pass other vehicles. The chase covered approximately 2.5 miles before the truck’s engine caught fire, sending fuel spraying onto the deputy’s car.
A Fiery Crash
As flames engulfed the truck, Reed lost control near the 140-mile marker, crashing into a fence beside the interstate. The deputy quickly approached the burning vehicle to rescue Reed and take him into custody. However, Reed had other plans.
