Department mourns Irving police officer killed in off-duty crash

The Irving Police Department is mourning the death of an officer who was killed in a motorcycle accident last weekend while off duty.

The crash occurred on Valley View Lane near Interstate 635. Investigators believe another driver failed to yield the right of way while turning, triggering a multi-vehicle collision. Ofc. Jerome Scholz, who was wearing a helmet at the time, did not survive.

Scholz, a five-year veteran of the department and a former U.S. Army member, was remembered by Police Chief Derrick Miller as a larger-than-life figure and a true servant leader.

Funeral arrangements are still being finalized as the department and community continue to grieve the loss.
