North Texas woman finds out she was switched at birth decades later

A North Texas woman thinks her whole life may have been different if the hospital where she was born hadn’t made a fundamental mistake.

Melissa Brewton of Glen Rose recently learned that she and another baby were switched at birth. They were born at Grapevine Memorial Hospital on April 24th, 1975. A DNA test turned up Brewton’s biological sister she never knew she had. That woman’s so-called “sister,” born the same day as Brewton at the same hospital took a DNA test which confirmed the swap.

Baylor Scott and White bought the hospital in 1981 but Brewton’s attorney Jonathan Wharton says that shouldn’t let them off the hook.

“The owners may have switched, but there needs to be some accountability and some recognition that this can happen,” Wharton said. “The protocols that the hospital has in place need to actually be followed. It is possible to send someone home with the wrong baby.”

Wharton said the woman who went home with Brewton’s biological parents had a very nice upbringing, got a good education, and had a fulfilling career. Brewton says her life was much more rough.
