McKinney airport could soon start passenger service

The McKinney City Council has unanimously approved a plan that could lead to passenger service at the city’s airport. McKinney National Airport currently serves business and private aircraft.

This week, the council rezoned about 75 acres of land west of the runway.

“This request to rezone the property comes in concert with the airport and their overall master plan,” says Director of Planning Jennifer Arnold.

The rezoning will allow for construction of a 30,000 square foot passenger terminal, parking garage with 1,500 spaces and refueling space for jets.

Last year, voters rejected a bond proposal to pay for the expansion. Mayor George Fuller says the city will pay for the project using grants and economic development funds.

He says passenger service could start by the end of 2026.

Earlier this year, the airport started construction on an expansion of its runway from 7,500 feet to 8,000 using money from TxDOT.

McKinney National Airport says it currently has a $299 million annual economic impact on the city and rest of North Texas, supporting 1,560 jobs. The airport says its impact has increased 41% since 2018.
