PLANO, Texas – A Plano Senior High student has been recognized for his bravery after helping police safely stop a reckless driver. Iker Sebastian Jaskille Castro, a student at the school, was awarded the 2024 Citizen Hero Award for his courageous actions.On October 4, 2024, Castro assisted Officer Landrum of the Plano Police Traffic Unit during a high-speed chase involving a vehicle traveling at 90 mph in a 40 mph zone, according to the Plano Texas Police Department. The driver, who appeared to be experiencing a mental health crisis, posed a significant threat to public safety as they weaved dangerously between lanes.Despite the risks, Castro chose to intervene, recognizing the danger and deciding to help Officer Landrum bring the vehicle to a safe stop. His actions placed him in harm’s way and involved him in a high-stakes situation, sacrificing his own safety and personal property to protect others, stated the department.The Plano Texas Police Department praised Castro’s actions, noting that they exemplify the best of community spirit and demonstrate how ordinary citizens can make extraordinary contributions in times of crisis. His bravery and commitment to public safety earned him the Citizen Hero Award.
