Historic crime rate decrease reported by Plano Police Department

PLANO, Texas — The Plano Police Department has announced a significant decline in crime rates over recent years, marking the lowest major crime rate since 1993. The department attributes this positive trend to the dedication of law enforcement officers, community leaders, and residents.

Recent data from the department’s Crime Analysis Unit indicates a continuing decrease in both violent and property crime rates. In 2024, major crime per 1,000 people was down 11.1%, with an overall major crime rate of 16.10, the lowest since the department began compiling data in 1993. Violent crime, which includes homicide, rape, robbery, and aggravated assault, saw a decrease in every category except aggravated assault, resulting in a rate of 1.55 per 1,000, down from 1.58 in 2015. Property crime, encompassing burglary, larceny, and motor vehicle theft, decreased by 11.9%, with a rate of 14.55 per 1,000, also the lowest since 1993.

The department credits several factors for the decrease in crime, including proactive investigations and advancements in technology by the Criminal Investigative Services Division, which have improved suspect identification and arrest rates. The increased use of surveillance devices in homes, businesses, and throughout the city has also contributed to more successful investigations.
