State House committee hears testimony on Kanakuk-related bill.

In our March issue, Claire Collins examined the long history of child sexual abuse allegations surrounding Kanakuk, a Missouri evangelical Christian camp popular with many families in Dallas and the Park Cities. Her story focused on the work of Highland Park High graduate Elizabeth Carlock Phillips, who began looking for justice for Kanakuk victims not long after her brother Trey, who was a victim, died by suicide.

Yesterday, that work included testifying before the Texas House Committee on Judiciary & Civil Jurisprudence, which was considering House Bill 748. (Rep. Morgan Meyer, who represents the Park Cities, is also a sponsor.) That bill, authored by Rep. Jeff Leach (R-Plano), would prevent nondisclosure agreements (Trey had signed one) from being used to prevent a victim of child sexual abuse and other crimes from revealing that abuse to others. It is called “Trey’s Law,” after Phillips’ brother. Cindy Clemishire, who accused Gateway Church founder Robert Morris of abuse, also testified…
