North Texas LDS temple get zoning approval – with several more conditions. What happens now?

FAIRVIEW, Texas — A controversial temple is one step closer to becoming a reality in Fairview … sort of.

After a long night of public comment and passionate debate Thursday, the Collin County town’s Planning and Zoning Commission voted to approve a conditional use permit to allow the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-Day Saints to build a temple in town. But that vote is just a recommendation to the town council, which will have the final say. And that recommendation was only approved under a series of significant conditions, most notably surrounding the height of the temple’s spire.

The dispute started in March 2024 when the Church proposed a 44,000 square-foot, multi-story temple with a spire that would stand 174 feet tall and sit on eight acres along Stacy Road. The project, dubbed the McKinney Texas Temple, caught the eye of Fairview neighbors, who raised concerns over the size and height of the project. The spire on the original proposal would have made it the tallest structure in town and exceed the maximum height allowed by zoning in that area…
