DALLAS — Dallas’ former longest-running Chinese restaurant was an entryway to the “American Dream” for its founding family and other owners afterward, and the site of countless celebrations over the years before its recent closure.
Hong Kong Restaurant was co-founded by Bill Pon in the 9000 block of Garland Road in East Dallas in 1962. Bill had immigrated to the U.S., arriving in California in 1928 when he was 14, and worked at restaurants there before moving to Dallas and opening his restaurant here.
His grandson Justin said Bill had studied cooking around the world, at one point going back to China to refine his skills…
