A halal eatery in Pilot Point gets a coveted spot on Texas Monthly’s list of the top 50 barbecue spots

PILOT POINT — Eager customers line up outside the small barbecue spot before it opens at 11 a.m. on a recent Sunday, filing the inside once the doors open and music starts playing.

Yearby’s Barbecue & Waterice, located at 209 S. Washington St. in Pilot Point, is a halal barbecue restaurant founded by Caleb Henley and his wife, Sabrina Brown-Henley. The couple is Muslim, and halal food is prepared in a way that is allowed under religious law.

“We chose to do halal barbecue, which is a very niche thing,” Henley said. “We decided to say ‘no pork’ and then ‘no alcohol.’ That’s a big deal in Texas. And just in barbecue culture in general.”
