Allen Police Officer Dominique Akins was among 31 law enforcement professionals recently recognized by the Texas Commission on Law Enforcement for exceptional acts of valor, professional achievement and public service. The awards go to selected peace officers, reserve officers, jailers, custodial officers and telecommunicators licensed by TCOLE who exceed normal job performance expectations.
Akins was finishing an unrelated call at the Allen Premium Outlets on the afternoon of May 6, 2023, when he heard gunshots. Without hesitation, he ran toward the sound, moving from the south to the north part of the crowded shopping center as the lone officer on scene.
As Akins moved closer to the gunman that day, he observed several people wounded by gunfire, including small children.
