Last week saw the breaking of new ground, quite literally, in McKinney, Texas, as the Texas Department of Transportation (TxDOT) ceremoniously marked the start of the Spur 399/State Highway 5 expansion project. This significant development is part of the broader Spur 399/US 380 Collin County corridor planning initiative aimed at contending with the area’s surging population and the traffic woes that accompany that growth.
“It’s taken a lot of effort to get to today, and I’m very happy to be here,” Texas Transportation Commissioner Robert Vaughn expressed during the event. According to TxDOT’s announcement, the project, beginning in June 2025, will see the expansion of Spur 399 from four lanes to six, with the aim of relieving the existing heavy traffic flow and supporting the foreseeable influx of residents.
Officials, alongside TxDOT representatives, described the plan as only the initial step in a series of investments designated for Collin County’s highways.
