Controversy has arisen from an incident captured on video and widely disseminated across social media platforms, depicting a confrontation between a man with no legs and police officers in Denton. The City of Denton Police Department addressed the video, which only partially showed the events that unfolded in the 2800 block of W. University Drive, through a social media post aimed at shedding more light on the circumstances leading up to the detainment of the individual in question.
The Denton Police Department’s statement highlighted that the officers were initially engaged in an unrelated traffic stop when they noticed the man, whom they recognized as someone who had previously been issued a criminal trespass warning by convenience store management. Questions have been raised about the necessity and nature of the police response, especially after the video surfaced of the man removing his prosthesis and the subsequent attempt by officers to detain him.
