North Texas family mourns ‘big-hearted’ Toby Carranza after tragic gas station shooting in Denton; suspect speaks from jail

DENTON, Texas — A North Texas family is grieving the loss of 30-year-old Fernando “Toby” Carranza, who police say was shot and killed during an argument at a QuikTrip gas station on West Eagle Drive in Denton.

His aunt, Veronica Gomez, described Carranza as “big-hearted and helpful.” He chose the nickname Toby when he was five years old, his aunt told WFAA.
