The city of Frisco is urging residents to update their passwords after learning that CodeRED, the third-party platform the city uses for emergency alerts, was impacted by a nationwide cybersecurity incident.
CodeRED notified municipalities across the country that its central system was breached through a third-party vendor, affecting data and access for cities and counties that rely on the service.
The breach was not limited to Frisco. North Texas cities, including Plano and McKinney, also use CodeRED for emergency notifications and may have been affected. Other communities, such as Allen, Celina and Prosper, use different emergency alert systems. But for anyone who maintains a CodeRED profile, cybersecurity experts and city officials stress the importance of taking precautions.
What Information May Have Been Exposed
According to CodeRED, “it appears that the impacted dataset may contain contact information of CodeRED users: name, address, email addresses, phone numbers and/or associated passwords used to create CodeRED user profiles for alerts. If the same password is used by users for other personal or business accounts, those passwords should be changed immediately.”…
