Expect longer-than-usual travel times across North Texas over the long weekend, as several highways will have construction closures.
Why it matters: Almost 1,000 road construction projects are already underway or starting in the region, per the Texas Department of Transportation.
- The projects are projected to cost over $9.6 billion. Another $9 billion in construction is scheduled to begin over the next four years.
The latest: In downtown Dallas, all lanes of Interstate 30 will be closed from 10pm Friday to 5am Monday. The closure, part of a project to widen the highway, will span between the Interstate 35E and Interstate 45 interchanges.
- TxDOT expects the closure will cause significant delays, with cars being routed to Highway 366.
- Parts of Cesar Chavez Boulevard, Cadiz Street and Akard Street are also closed for construction.
Zoom in: In Tarrant County, all of the free westbound lanes of Interstate 820 from Rufe Snow Drive to Interstate 35W will close from Friday night to Sunday morning. Drivers will be able to use the 820 toll lanes at no cost.
- Parts of State Highway 121 and State Highway 183 will also be closed over the weekend.
